The four fees Etsy charges
Etsy's own documentation is clear about the first two, and they are the ones sellers most often get wrong:
- Listing fee — a flat $0.20 per listing. Etsy charges this "regardless of whether or not the item listed sells", and charges it again for each additional item bought from a multi-quantity listing.
- Transaction fee — 6.5% of the total order amount. The important detail: Etsy states this "applies to the total cost of the item, along with shipping and gift wrap (if you charge your customers for those)". Sellers who assume the 6.5% only touches the item price under-count every order that has postage on it.
- Payment processing fee. Etsy charges this on each transaction that uses Etsy Payments, and it is a set rate that depends on your country. The 3% + $0.25 default above is an editable example, not your rate — look yours up before relying on it.
- Offsite Ads fee. Only charged when a buyer reaches you through an Etsy-purchased ad. Leave it at 0 for normal sales; set it to your rate when you want to see the worst case.
The shipping trap, with numbers
Using the defaults: a $35 item with $6 shipping charged. Buyer pays $41.
The 6.5% transaction fee is charged on $41, not $35 — that is $2.67 instead of $2.28. Small, until you notice it happens on every order forever. On 200 orders a year that difference alone is about $78. And if your real postage costs $7.40 while you charge the buyer $6.00, you are also absorbing $1.40 per order — losing $280 a year on shipping while believing it is free to you.
What to do with the result
Look at the split bar. If the "Profit" segment is under about a fifth of the bar, the product is doing a lot of work for very little return, and the fix is almost never "sell more" — it is raising the price, charging real postage, or cutting the unit cost. Selling twice as many of a barely-profitable item just doubles your workload.

Does Etsy really charge the transaction fee on shipping?
Yes. Etsy's help documentation states the 6.5% applies to the total cost of the item along with shipping and gift wrap when you charge the customer for those. This calculator applies it to item price plus shipping charged, which is why its result is slightly lower than calculators that only fee the item price.
What is the Etsy payment processing fee in my country?
It is a set rate that varies by country, so there is no single figure that would be honest to print here. Etsy publishes the per-country rates in its help centre — enter yours in the field above and the result updates.
Should I include the $0.20 listing fee on every sale?
For a rough per-sale figure, yes, include it once. For a full picture, remember the fee is charged whether or not the item sells and again on renewal — so a listing that never sells is a pure cost that this per-order view does not capture.
