The formula this uses
Net profit is what is left after every outflow, not just the cost of the product:
Net profit = Revenue − Product cost − Shipping − Platform fee − Payment fee − Other costs
Net margin % = (Net profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Margin and markup are not the same number, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in small-scale selling. Margin divides profit by the selling price. Markup divides profit by the cost. A product bought at $10 and sold at $20 has a 50% margin and a 100% markup — identical money, very different-looking percentage. Suppliers quote markup. Your bank account cares about margin.
Worked example
Take the default values above: a $29.99 item costing $8.50 to make, $4.20 to ship, on a platform charging 6.5% plus a 3% + $0.25 payment fee.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $29.99 |
| Product cost | −$8.50 |
| Shipping | −$4.20 |
| Platform fee (6.5%) | −$1.95 |
| Payment fee (3% + $0.25) | −$1.15 |
| Net profit | $14.19 |
That is a 47.3% net margin. Notice the fees alone took $3.10 — over 10% of the sale price. Sellers who calculate margin as "price minus product cost" would have believed they made $21.49 on this sale, a 51% overstatement of their profit.
Where to check your real fee rates
Every fee field above is editable because rates change and vary by country, category and plan. Pull your real numbers from your own dashboard before you trust any calculator's defaults — including this one. Etsy publishes its rates in Etsy Fee Basics, and PayPal publishes its commercial rates on its merchant fees page.
Questions
What is a good profit margin for an online store?
There is no single correct figure, and anyone quoting one without asking what you sell is guessing. Margins depend on category, order value and whether you ship physical goods. What matters more is direction: know your current net margin, then work on the biggest single line in the split bar above.
Why is my margin lower than I expected?
Almost always shipping and payment processing. Both are easy to leave out of a mental calculation, and on a low-priced item the fixed portion of the payment fee (a flat $0.25 or so per transaction) can be several percent of the whole sale on its own.
Does this calculator store my numbers?
No. The whole calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, there is no account, and closing the tab discards everything.
