7 Hidden Costs of Selling Online

The fees sellers plan for are the percentage ones. The fees that actually erode profit are smaller, more frequent, and easy to leave out of a mental calculation. These seven are the usual suspects.

1. The fixed part of the payment fee

Payment processing is a percentage plus a fixed amount per transaction. PayPal, for example, publishes commercial rates such as 3.49% plus a fixed fee that varies by the currency received, per its merchant fees page. On a $50 sale that fixed portion is negligible. On a $4 sale it can be 8% of the whole thing. Low-priced items are hit hardest by the cost sellers notice least.

2. Return postage you never get back

A returned item costs you the outbound postage, often the return postage, the repackaging, and sometimes the item itself. A 10% return rate does not remove 10% of profit — it removes rather more.

3. Currency conversion

Selling in one currency and banking in another usually costs a conversion margin on top of any percentage-based international fee. PayPal, for instance, publishes an additional percentage fee for international commercial transactions on the page above. Invisible on a statement, permanent on every cross-border sale.

4. Listing fees on items that never sell

Where a platform charges per listing, that cost is incurred whether or not anything sells. Etsy's documentation is explicit that its $0.20 listing fee applies regardless of a sale. A hundred hopeful listings is a real monthly cost attached to zero revenue.

5. Your own time

Photographing, listing, packing, answering messages, handling problems. Unpaid, unavoidable, and the largest omitted cost in most small shops. Price 30 minutes of your time per order and see what happens to your margin.

6. Packaging and consumables

Boxes, mailers, tape, tissue, labels, ink. Cheap individually, ordered in bulk so easy to forget, and a genuine per-unit cost. Divide the last bulk order by the units it covered.

7. Storage and stock that does not move

Unsold inventory is money you already spent, sitting still. In a fulfilment warehouse it also charges rent. Slow stock has a cost even when it appears to be free space at home — the cash is locked up and cannot be reinvested.

Add them all in once

Run one real product through the calculator with every one of these included. The resulting margin is usually a shock the first time, and it is the first honest number you have had. That number, not the optimistic one, is what to price against.
