How to Set a Minimum Order Value
Every order carries costs that do not shrink with its size: a fixed payment fee, packaging, the trip to the post office, and your time. Below a certain order value those fixed costs exceed the margin the order generates, and the sale loses money no matter how healthy the margin percentage looks.
Find your per-order fixed cost
Add up what any order costs you regardless of value:
- Fixed portion of the payment processing fee
- Any fixed per-order marketplace charge
- Packaging: mailer, tape, label, filler
- Postage, if you absorb it
- Your time to pick, pack and dispatch, at a real hourly rate
A realistic total for a home-run shop is $3 to $8 per order once time is included honestly.
Calculate the floor
Minimum order value = Per-order fixed cost ÷ Contribution margin ratio
With $5 of fixed cost and a 35% contribution margin ratio: $5 ÷ 0.35 = $14.29. Any order below roughly $14 makes you nothing or costs you money.
If your fixed cost is $7 and your ratio is 25%: $28. That is a much higher floor than most sellers assume, and it explains why a shop full of $9 orders can be busy and broke.
Three ways to act on it
1. A minimum order threshold
Simple and honest, and normal in wholesale. Less common in consumer retail, where it can read as unfriendly.
2. Shipping that reflects the real cost below the threshold
Charge postage on small orders and offer free shipping above your threshold. The buyer chooses, and both options are profitable for you. This is usually the best answer.
3. Reprice or bundle the small items
If a $6 item cannot carry a $5 fixed cost, either it should not be sold alone or it should be sold as a multi-pack. Selling three as one unit turns three unprofitable orders into one good one.
Set the threshold slightly above average order value
If your average order is $22, a free-shipping threshold at $27 nudges baskets upward without being out of reach. Set it at $60 and buyers ignore it entirely.
Recheck when costs move
Postage increases and payment fee changes both move your floor. Run the numbers again rather than keeping a threshold you set two years ago — and remember the fixed cost includes your time, which is the component sellers leave out and then wonder where the profit went.
